Steve Stred’s Books From The Crypt 13
Unlucky number thirteen has arrived… muahahahaha!
What do I have in store for this unholiest of editions?
Why three more books you should read. Three more books that for some reason (mind-boggling really) have yet to hit 50 ratings on Goodreads.
As usual, let’s start this off with a book haiku.
Brutal and dark tales.
Books staying long after done.
Dancing in your head.
Good? Great! Here we go.
The Devil’s List – Terry M. West.
Originally published May 2020.
West knows how to write brutal and bloody. With this novella, ‘The Devil’s List’ uses West’s real-life connection with a killer to create an unnerving piece of fiction. We get to see someone transform before our eyes as nothing seems to go their way. This was a fast-paced, quick read, but it will stay with you for long after you’ve closed the book.

What Sleeps Beneath – John Quick.
Originally published March 2019.
As I said before, John Quick is an author you should be reading and with ‘What Sleeps Beneath’ we get a brutal story of something forgotten below an abandoned asylum. It is a pulse-pounding story, one that has moments of such terror you’ll need to put the book down and check that the doors are locked. This was a great read and one that more folks should devour.

The Keeper of Chernobyl – Alessandro Manzetti.
Originally published October 2019.
This novella is unnerving. It also appears to be a book that slipped through the cracks. It was nominated for a Bram Stoker Award yet I don’t see more people singing its praises. We get to see a secret underground bunker slowly unravel as test subjects get out of control and blame begins to get placed. Manzetti does a great job of walking that line of fiction and plausibility/possibility. You never know what’s truly going on underground, but I sure hope it isn’t this.
