Ultimate Dinosaur Dance-Off: Andrew J. Stone

I always, always hate when reviews start with a variation of these sentences, but sadly I must share one myself; I’m not the biggest fan of Bizarro and it’s not a genre I actively seek out.

Saying that, I’ve read some of Danger Slater’s work and Jon Bassof’s and have enjoyed it.

Andrew J. Stone came onto my radar with his release ‘All Hail the House Gods,’ which is one of the best books I’ve ever read. Seriously. It’s an insane book that is just dread personified.

Andrew recently contacted me to see if I’d give his latest a read ‘The Ultimate Dinosaur Dance-Off.’ Sure, I replied. How long is it? I asked. 177 pages, he replied. I’ll read it this weekend, I replied, send Gav a review asap.

Guess what? This thing is what you need in 2020. In a world gone mad, restrictions in place and sadness, despair and loss a common denominator, I read this book over two hours last night, a massive smile planted on my face.

What I liked: BONKERS! my friends, TOTAL BONKERS! I honestly can’t do this synopsis justice. Colin wants to dance. His dad wants him to study geology. But Colin is a really great dancer. One night, at a party, they dance to a mysterious pirate ship. That’s a dinosaur.

Seriously. When the pirate ship spoke to them, I lost it. Grin from ear to ear. Stone is an amazing writer and has a gift of carrying a story all the way through.

As the cover suggests, this is a psychedelic acid trip through prehistoric paleo parties.

I mean, come on. I would struggle to write a 1000 word short story off the concept, but Stone carried this through to its fullest.

What I didn’t like: I mean, it is Bizarro so there are some incredibly insane moments in here that’ll either completely work or won’t for each reader

Why you should buy this: If you’re looking for a book with heart, soul and just a really fun narrative at its core, look no further. Andrew J. Stone has really delivered a chuckle a minute book here. One I’m glad I decided to agree to read.
