Infested: Carol Gore
Reviewed By Becca Futrell
Infested by Carol Gore was my second read from Unnerving’s Rewind or Die series; it may be too soon to tell, but I have an inkling that I’m going to be absolutely obsessed with this entire collection. Rewind or Die is meant to give you all of the feels that walking into the horror selection at a VHS rental store gave you. So far, it’s safe to say that the series is doing exactly as it planned.
Infested is what my nightmares are made of. I probably would have gotten more sleep this past weekend, if I didn’t imagine gigantic bugs crawling all over me. Gore wrote out an entire scene where a character describes in great detail how a mosquito bite works; I’m very impressed with her ability to be able to research something that, and also I’m 99% sure that I’ve developed a fear of the blood-sucking creatures.
One thing I love about Infested is that on the surface, we can consider the villains to be the bugs that are eating alligators from the inside out and sucking humans dry. However, it’s clear that the true villains are humans. I’ve always been obsessed with this concept in the horror genre.
In the beginning, we learn that Mr. Wright, the owner of Green Swamp Zip-Line Adventure and Campground, refuses to close down because it’s the height of the season, and of course, he doesn’t want to lose out on money. Recently, I did a re-watch of Jaws and couldn’t help but compare it to Infested. In Jaws, it’s the height of the season, and although there’s a man-eating shark in the water, they refuse to close down the beach. What’re a few lives when you’re making that cash, amiright?
There’s more to this novella than just the horror. We get a glimpse into the life of the camp manager, Casey. Her brother, Brody, is a cop and a complete douche. Her mother is addicted to pain pills and doesn’t win any mother-of-the-year awards. But with the bug infestation, can this family get it together? This is when you pick up Infested and find out!
Infested is super gruesome and detailed in terms of the deaths that take place. Again, this is what my nightmares are made of. I’m confident that Carol Gore’s submission to Rewind or Die is going to stick with me for quite some time. Make sure to check it out, but keep the bug spray nearby!
Infested
Swarms of powerful mosquitoes sucking victims dry. Insatiable horseflies feasting on living flesh. Huge roaches with a ferocious bite. No tent is safe at the Green Swamp Zip-Line Adventure and Campground.Camp manager, Casey Lovitt, and entomologist, Dr. Phillip Edwards, must go up against powerful business interests and cover-ups from the local sheriff’s department to stop the deadly infestation. And with the busy tourist season fast approaching, time is running out. Will Casey and Phillip stop the onslaught of hungry bugs, or will the bodies continue to pile up among the long-buried secrets of the Green Swamp?
