Double Barrel Horror Volume 3: Edited By Matthew Weber
Reviewed By Steve Stred
Pint Bottle Press returns with the third installment of their gruesome double feature collection and for this one, they’ve collected some outstanding authors. Featuring Christine Morgan, Robert Essig. Mark Matthews, Theresa Braun, Calvin Demmer and Glenn Rolfe this is one guaranteed to have an author with a story you must read.
What I liked: I really enjoy how each author had two stories which allowed them to go in completely different directions. There were some stand out tales for sure – Demmer’s ‘Highway Hunger,’ Essig’s ‘From Unclean Spills,’ and Braun’s ‘Stillborn‘ were all immensely captivating. The stories move quickly and with no real minimum or maximum on word count it looks like the authors were able to just have fun.
What I didn’t like: I’m finding more and more I’m struggling to connect with anthologies, but with this being two stories from each author it made it easier for me to dive in. I will say, each story left me wanting more which is a rarity when some anthologies can be a real mixed bag.
Why you should buy it: This is a really, really strong collection featuring some of the current standouts in indie and small press horror. Saying that – both Mark Matthews and Glenn Rolfe have two stories each, but their four stories alone are stunning and should be read by all. Matthews has a way of repulsing but creating characters you connect with, which happened both in his gross-out carnie story ‘Wicked Smart Carnie‘ but Jesus did he ever go straight for the heart with his second story ‘Goodwin.’ It had shades of his novella ‘Body of Christ‘ but this one just crushed me. Rolfe meanwhile decided to go the ghost route and both stories were amazing. ‘The Guide‘ was touching while haunting but the real gem was his ‘The House on Mayflower Street.’ A haunted house novel told over a dozen pages. Just really, really well done.
I had a blast (ha!) with this one and I think you will as well!
